LabRat

With a background in Death Metal and Rap, LabRat has been producing music for a decade. Within the last 3 years, he has turned his mind to electronic music and dubstep. So far this has been a good decision for the Santa Cruz based producer as he has been signed to GruntWorthy Music, is planning a Spring 2013 tour and is in works on his second EP which should be released in early 2013. Though his songs tend to be on the heavier side, LabRat has no problem throwing in some trance-y elements to his songs which compliment the heaviness very nicely. As I browse his released tracks, I can feel the growth and refinement in LabRat’s style (my favorite of his songs released only 3 months ago). If he continues to progress this way he should have no problem making a name for himself.

Starting out with some great old school vibes, Dopamine is one of the best dubstep songs in this style I’ve heard in awhile. I love how the song doesn’t feel rushed and instead is allowed to flow in it’s own time. Continuously transforming both the synths used and the rhythm, LabRat has made a jam that I will be listening to for a long time. Stardust, LabRat’s most popular song, starts out with that trance-y sound that I’m quickly growing to love in dubstep. Once again, the song is done well thanks to the diverse synths and not overly repetitive nature that seems to have become prevalent with many newer producers (and even the more experienced). Hip hop and dubstep are one of the more perfect combinations of genres (besides maybe reggae and dubstep) and I am definitely digging this remix of Wiz Khalifa’s This Plane. Planet of the Chaunch, starts out as a fairly stereotypical dubstep track but then launches some welcome and unexpected funk about half way through. Enjoy!
